Start with coordination, not matching
You do not need matching outfits. In fact, photographs usually feel more natural when everyone is coordinated rather than dressed identically. Pick two or three complementary tones and allow each person to dress in a way that still feels like them. Neutral colours, earthy tones, soft blues, olive, cream and warm browns tend to sit naturally in Cape Winelands landscapes.
Avoid anything that competes with faces
Very large logos, high-contrast graphics and extremely bright colours can pull attention away from expressions. That does not mean everyone must wear beige. The goal is simply to keep clothing supporting the photograph rather than becoming the photograph.
Texture works better than too many patterns
Linen, denim, knits, soft cotton and layered fabrics photograph beautifully because they create subtle visual depth. If someone wears a pattern, keep the rest of the family's clothing quieter so the frame does not become too busy.
Dress for movement
Our family sessions involve walking, sitting, playing and interacting. Clothing should allow you to move comfortably. If a child is uncomfortable in an outfit before the session begins, that discomfort will usually show. Comfortable shoes also matter when we are working outdoors.
Think about the setting and the season
A summer session among dry grasses will feel different from a winter session under soft grey skies. We can help you adjust colours and layers to suit the location. The final test is simple: when you look at the clothes together, do they feel like one family without looking like a uniform? If yes, you are on the right track.
