What is golden hour?

Golden hour is the period shortly after sunrise or before sunset when the sun is lower in the sky. The light is usually warmer and less harsh than midday sun, producing softer shadows and a more atmospheric background.

Why it works well for people

Softer light tends to be kinder to faces and gives us more freedom in how we position families. It can also create warm backlight around hair and clothing, especially in open natural settings.

Somerset West has strong seasonal differences

Sunset time changes significantly between summer and winter, so a family with very young children may not always want the technically perfect golden-hour slot. We balance light with children's routines because a beautiful sunset does not help if everyone is exhausted.

Cloudy days can be excellent

Golden hour is not the only good light. Overcast conditions create a large, soft light source and can work beautifully for portraits. We do not cancel a session simply because the sky is not glowing orange.

Timing is one part of the photograph

Location, weather, family energy and the direction of the light all matter. Golden hour is a useful tool, not a guarantee. We choose timing based on the people and the story we are trying to photograph.
